audiovisual dance-performance
Shadow Work is an experimental audiovisual dance performance created by Nancy el Azzy, Patricio Capelo aka NADA, and Tim Auzinger.
It explores the many possible versions of ourselves that exist within, but rarely become visible in our daily lives. Every decision we make could potentially create a different version of who we are. Haven't we all asked ourselves, “What if I never stopped playing the piano?” or “Could I be an astronaut?”
Inspired by the massive blackout event that took place in Spain in 2025, the performance investigates the potential of such disruptive moments for self-reflection and the challenge of being truly present with oneself. On that day, many people were unable to attend important meetings or meet deadlines and were forced to face this interruption—an opportunity to connect with their inner selves and emotions.
The performance uses this suppression of self-reflection in daily routines as a narrative device. Real-world video footage is combined with virtual shadows created by Tim and Nancy to visualize this internal dialogue and the possible struggle with our own selves. Volumetric captures of the dancer were recorded and are dynamically played back and altered live during the show. The music is performed live on-site by Patricio, using electric guitar, effect pedals, and samples.
A special thanks goes to our dancer, Fabia, whose expressive movements only really bring the concept of Shadow Work to life.
Shadow Work was produced as part of an Immersive Arts class with Desilence and premiered at the IAS-Lab Community Show on June 27, 2025.
