audiovisual kinetic installation

Become and Break is an ongoing project of audiovisual kinetic light sculptures developed together with Daniel Baer. We explore how personal and social rhythms are reflected in algorithmically controlled systems of movement, light, and sound. The project grows from our own observations of our relationship to reality that is constantly shifting between enthusiasm and exhaustion, belonging and isolation — between flowing with the rhythm of work and the feeling of getting lost in it.
Central to the project is an ensemble of computer-aided performers: hybrid, non-human actors whose expression emerges from the relation between human intention and machine execution. Each performer consists of two one meter LED segments connected by joints and driven by servo motors.

This is the first work in a series of explorations using different configurations and arrangements of these performers. Here, the focus is on two of them: a couple. Their relationship is shaped by technical rules and by space, producing a controlled intimacy through synchronized motion, changes in speed, sound, light, and rhythm. They remain in a state of constant tension, potential- ly touching at any moment without ever doing so. Sound Recordings of the mechanical noise is constantly restructured, bend, chopped or stretched and linked to the motion and lighting.
The arrangement offers a first, close-up view into the larger project. We look at the rela- tionship between the two performers as a dynamic system of dependency, synchroniza- tion, and deviation. It serves as an abstracted image of how we continuously adjust our- selves in relation to others and our surroundings. We invite visitors to explore what kinds of relationships they might read into these two moving machines.
